Trying to get reliable information about airline policies and security procedures was difficult at best. Airline customer service reps had no interest in the topic. Fellow musicians told war stories, but they reflected wildly different experiences, from good to awful.
Getting on airliners with those expensive guitars was downright nerve-wracking. Every encounter with airline personnel and TSA officers was a crapshoot. We expected indifference and hostility, and sometimes got it. Yet all of the guitars survived that year of living dangerously.
Searching the web, we were able to piece together a fairly good picture of what to expect before flying with these instruments, but it was all too much hassle. There was no central place on the Web addressing the what’s-what of traveling with guitars. Now there is. Hope it’s helpful.
